Google now explains why it gives you search results

Ever been curious as to why you get certain search results on Google? Perhaps you’re keen to learn more about Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and Search Engine Results Page (SERP), or you expected particular results and didn’t get what you were after?

Google now explains why it is providing the search results it gives you. Announced on their blog in late July, the About This Result panel explains the keywords picked up in the search term and relevant information to ensure Google users know the relevancy to themselves and their location.

At this stage, it’s only being implemented in English in the United States before being expanded to new regions and languages.

Google’s new About This Result feature.

The About This Results panel on Google can be found via three dots on the top right of a search result box.

The Google About This Results feature shows reasoning behind why it presents you with the results it does:

  • Matching keywords: Which words from your search appear in the top results provided.

  • Related terms: Words that appear in the search results that are related matches for the words or phrases used.

For example, if you search “hotglue agency”, your related terms may be “media agency” or “hot glue” (although, as our website suggests, we don’t sell glue!).

  • Looking at links: The feature also analyses the backlinks related to the result so you can see other websites that have referenced the result, which may help users understand the relevance and authenticity of the information.

  • Local relevance: Google enhances results by using your country and location to ensure the results are as relevant as possible.

Basically, Google is providing users with the tools to understand the search engine better and determine how useful suggested results may be for them.

Will you use this feature when it arrives in your region?
